ABOUT THE ARTIST
I am a freelance artist working primarily in mosaics. After spending the last 12 years teaching art and running art workshops, I now devote my time working on portrait and pet commissions.
Unlike other media, mosaic has a number of limitations but I enjoy the challenge it offers and continue to explore its full potential.
I am inspired by Caravaggio who was one of the few masters including Vermeer and Rembrandt who all used the Chiaroscuro method of painting where strong bold contrasts between light and dark are used in the whole composition. Unlike the traditional method of preparing mosaic using small formulaic pieces to build up the image, I like to adopt a more painterly approach using different sized pieces looking specifically for the lights and darks in the source image. I enjoy working mainly in monochrome (sepia and black/white) using the lighter tonal ranges of ceramic tiles.
My acrylic and pastel work has been featured in the Artists & Illustrators magazine.
